Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area on September 22. Volunteers can meet at the North/South Trail-head across from the South Welcome Station to help clean up the Fort Henry Trails from 8:30 – 11:30a.m. Volunteers need to sign up by calling 270-924-2007 or emailing volunteer@friendsoflbl.org.
“National Public Lands Day is the single largest volunteer event for public lands.” said Birdie Garrity, volunteer coordinator with Friends of Land Between the Lakes. “It’s a fun way to get outside, meet new people and help maintain one of our historic trails.”
Volunteers will need to bring a water bottle. Bug spray, hand tools, garbage bags and lunch will be provided courtesy of a TVA grant to the Friends of Land Between the Lakes.
If you are looking to come out and enjoy your public lands for the day the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm will be open free to the public from 10am-5pm.
Woodlands Nature Station will be hosting their annual Wild Edibles Program 10am-4pm with a variety of hikes based around wild edibles. Pre-registration is required for the Mushroom Hikes at 1:30p.m. and 2:30p. Call 270-924-2020 to sign up for the hikes.
National Public Lands Day was established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September. The day celebrates the connection between people and green spaces, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages use of open space for education, recreation, and general health.
